Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our malts and our malthouse

Why choose our malts?

What are the advantages of craft malt compared to industrial malt?

Craft malt offers several significant advantages for discerning brewers:

Fossil-free: we are the only Belgian malthouse malting without imported gas — a differentiating story you can tell with your beers.

Superior quality and consistency: contrary to popular belief, a modern craft malthouse can achieve remarkable consistency. Our production conditions (temperature, humidity, ventilation) are rigorously controlled, and the automation of certain processes guarantees exemplary reproducibility from batch to batch.

Flavor differentiation: craft malting allows the development of more complex and distinctive aromatic profiles. Small batches allow us to finely adjust kilning parameters to create malts with unique characters.

Incomparable freshness: our malts are produced in small quantities and sold quickly. This freshness translates into more vivid aromas and better enzymatic performance during brewing.

Personalized service: we know each of our customers and can adapt our products to their specific needs — small batches, mixed pallets, technical advice.

Is craft malt really more expensive?

Craft malt represents a slightly higher investment than standard industrial malt, but this price difference is fully justified.

The cost of malt represents only a fraction of the cost price of a beer (generally 5 to 15%). The impact on the final price of your beer is therefore minimal, while the difference in quality is noticeable by your customers.

Moreover, our organic and local malts allow you to enhance your beer with an authentic story and differentiating sales arguments. For craft breweries that focus on quality and authenticity, craft malt is a profitable investment.

Is craft malt less consistent than industrial malt?

This is a common misconception, but reality is often the opposite. A modern craft malthouse like MAD can achieve superior consistency for several reasons:

Rigorous control: we check each batch of barley upon receipt and each malt production before shipment. Nothing leaves our malthouse without being analyzed.

Controlled conditions: our rotating drum ensures perfectly homogeneous germination and kilning. Temperature and humidity conditions are constantly monitored.

Targeted automation: we use automation where it improves consistency, while retaining artisanal know-how for steps that require expertise.

Small batches: working in small batches allows us to react quickly to any variation and adjust our parameters in real time.

Why choose organic?

Why are your malts 100% organic?

Our choice of 100% organic is above all a choice of coherence: our barley grows on living soils, without synthetic chemical inputs, at farms in our region paid a fair price.

Environmental impact: organic farming preserves biodiversity, protects soils and groundwater, and reduces pollution linked to chemical inputs. By choosing organic, you support a sustainable agricultural model.

Taste quality: cereals grown without synthetic inputs develop pure and authentic aromatic profiles, which are found in the malt and ultimately in your beer.

A complete local supply chain: from field to malthouse, your organic malt is fully traceable — a story your customers can taste and understand.

What is the problem with synthetic fertilizers?

Synthetic fertilizers, although effective in increasing agricultural yields, pose several environmental and energy problems:

Massive energy consumption: the production of nitrogen fertilizers by the Haber-Bosch process consumes about 1 to 2% of world energy.

Water pollution: nitrates seep into groundwater and waterways, causing eutrophication and drinking water contamination.

Soil degradation: intensive use of synthetic fertilizers depletes soil microbial life and reduces natural long-term fertility.

By choosing organic cereals, we support agriculture that nourishes soils rather than depleting them, and that preserves water resources for future generations.

Our malthouse

What makes MAD unique?

100% renewable energy: we are the only malthouse in Belgium to operate without imported gas. Our heating system combines wood chips from local by-products and certified green electricity.

Complete circular economy: steeping water irrigates the adjacent farmland, rootlets feed local livestock. No waste leaves our malthouse.

Fair price for farmers: we buy our cereals at a fair price, taking into account actual production costs.

Expertise and passion: our team combines scientific expertise (PhD, R&D in malting) and sustainable entrepreneurial vision.

Do you offer Demeter malts?

Yes. Part of our barley, grown at Ferme de Waulx adjacent to the malthouse, is Demeter certified (biodynamic agriculture). We therefore offer a limited range of Demeter malts — a rarity in Belgium.

Limited quantities: contact us for availability and conditions.

Can we visit the malthouse?

Yes, we organize visits to our malthouse by appointment. It's an opportunity to discover:

  • The malting process from A to Z
  • Our modern equipment (steeping tank, rotating drum, laboratory)
  • Our 100% renewable heating system
  • Our circular economy approach

Visits last about 1.5 hours and end with a tasting of beers brewed with our malts. Contact us to book your visit.
